Where can I download family tree X?
Not here. The Family Tree Registry does not contain any family trees, but each registration of a family tree does describe its availability. Availability can be private, meaning that a private party maintains the family tree; online, meaning that the family tree is available online at the stated URL; published, meaning that the family tree has been published in the stated place (e.g., a book); or repository, meaning that the family tree resides in the stated repository (e.g., an archive). For family trees that are available privately, you are able to contact the submitter directly, either through our online contact form, if the submitter has chosen to remain anonymous, or at the stated email address.
I am trying to register my family tree, but I don't know how to/don't want to fill out all of the fields in the registration form. What should I do?
The only required fields are tree title and availability for family trees, and surname, for each surname you choose to add. All other fields are optional, so you can leave them blank.
What is the purpose of the fields native surname and native city that I see when trying to add a surname to a family tree I have registered?
These fields exist to allow you to specify surnames and cities in non-Latin alphabets. For example, you can type Polish, German, Chinese, or Hebrew characters in these fields. This is especially useful when there is no standard transliteration of the native spellings into Latin letters.
I am adding a surname to a family tree I have registered, and I want to specify more than one city associated with the surname. How can I do this?
For each city you want to specify, add a separate surname listing. This might seem redundant at first, but this method allows tremendous flexibility. For example, you can indicate that some Smiths on your family tree lived in Boston from 1700-1750 and were Protestants, while other Smiths lived in New York from 1890-1950.
I can't find an ethnicity/sub-ethnicity/religion/sub-religion that is appropriate for my tree/surname. What should I do?
Contact us to suggest the addition of a new ethnicity/sub-ethnicity/religion/sub-religion. While waiting for it to be added, simply leave this field blank (you can edit your tree/surname later, once the addition is made).
I forgot my password, but I did not supply an email address when creating my account, so I cannot fill out the "forgotten password or username" form. How can I access my account?
Unfortunately, you can't. Without an email address, we have no way of verifying that you are indeed the person who created the account. Since we respect our users' privacy, your only option is to create a new account. Family trees you previously registered will remain, but you will not be able to edit them. Of course, you can reregister them with your new account.
